The eventful fourth day of the ongoing Test between India and England was so absorbing that everyone including the umpires failed to notice that Ravichandran Ashwin bowled just five balls in one of his overs.
Earlier, the Indian team had set England a mammoth total of 405 runs after being dismissed for 204 runs in their second innings. With the pitch offering variable bounce and turn, it was expected that the Indian spinners would make light work of the English batsmen on a fourth day pitch. However, their openers Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed showed great calm and composure and thwarted the Indian bowlers for more than 50 overs.
The hosts desperately needed a breakthrough and it finally got the better of them when they unsuccessfully reviewed an LBW decision against the England skipper in the 47th over. It was India’s second unsuccessful review in as many overs which left them completely puzzled. In fact, the incident not only made the players perplexed but the on-field umpires also had a lapse in concentration as they called it ‘over’ even before Ashwin could bowl the final delivery of the 47th over.
