Unbelievable knock, we were never there – Gautam Gambhir
Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell’s 96 runs partnership helped Kolkata Knight Riders to win a crucial match against Royal Challengers Bangalore from the jaws of defeat. Royal Challengers Bangalore batting first scored 185. KKR bowler Umesh Yadav proved the most expensive bowler of the match as he conceded 56 runs in four overs.
KKR commencing the chase lost the wicket of Robin Uthappa. Captain Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey were unlucky. But Pathan and Russell’s cameo bruised RCB. KL Rahul , who scored 52 for RCB, conceded some important runs behind the wicket.
KKR captain Gautam Gambhir is overwhelmed by the match winning partnership of Russell and Pathan. He particularly praised Pathan’s 60 runs knock. Gambhir said at the post-match press conference said, “Unbelievable knock. We were never there. The way we started, our cv wasn’t up to the mark. This is one of my favourite Russell innings. That one over from Watson where Yusuf cashed in set the game for us. At this venue, 12-13 runs per over are chased. We know Surya can be dangerous as a finisher as well. We knew they had the Indian bowling and not much of death bowling experience. These are positive signs. Umesh didn’t have a good day. We need to sort these last 2 overs out.”
“Nothing much to say. I think we needed to take our chances. Getting to 100/4 and then getting it to go away. A couple of chances came our way and guys like Russell will make you pay. We got 175, the wicket was sticky and their bowlers bowled well. We were on course, our batters had bowled well but that’s how it goes. If you don’t take chances, the other team will make you pay. These games can pull a player down. Need to be positive and need to correct our mistakes,” says Kohli who seemed cheery (these losses have number him, perhaps)
How well these two played can be fathomed from the fact that the duo amassed 96 runs off 51 balls. So far in the IPL, the talk has been about RCB’s weak bowling line-up. After yet another dismal show tonight, they are far from getting over.
When exactly do you think that a match is in your kitty? Anytime but not as long as Andre Russell is out there (add to that the once in a blue moon flourish from Yusuf Pathan too). Bangalore had done enough to check the charge from the top order. Wickets at regular interval meant that the run-rate plummeted. But Russell and Pathan had other ideas. Their supreme ability to clear the fence hurt Bangalore as mishits flew out of the park.
Andre Russell who scored useful 39 runs and took three wickets for 11 runs has declared the man of the match. He said, “I have to believe written on the back of my bat. Well done to the guys tonight. We backed out strength. We are two strong guys and he took the pressure off me, made my job easier. Bowling against Chris, Kohli and Rahul in good form…I am happy with 3/11.”
