New Zealand pack leader Trent Boult stated that the plan of using short ball against Indian captain, Virat Kohli was a good one. Boult revealed the plan was to dry up the scoring areas of Virat Kohli and not to provide largesse to him. Kohli is a kind of batsman who likes to hit the ground running and New Zealand fast bowlers were successful in keeping him in check.

In fact, Kiwis’ first plan against Virat Kohli was to test him on the fifth stump line. However, when that strategy didn’t pay dividends, the hosts’ were quick to shift to plan B, which was to test Kohli’s temperament with short balls. The ploy worked wonders as Kohli went for the pull shot and got an edge to the keeper, BJ Watling.

Boult stuck to his guns.

It was a massive wicket for the hosts as Kohli had somehow got off to a start. The Indian captain has looked out of sorts as he has managed only one fifty on the New Zealand tour.

“Almost every time we miss, he hits and he hits it well and gets boundaries. From our point of view, we are just trying to dry the boundaries for him. I think using the wicket and using the short ball was a good plan and being able to control his run rate. It’s nice to draw the air out of him,” Boult told reporters after Stumps on Day 3.

On the other hand, Boult was also able to take crucial wickets of Prithvi Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara. Boult cramped Shaw for room and the Indian opener could not keep his shot to the ground whereas Pujara decided to leave the ball which was coming into him. Meanwhile, Boult believes there is still a lot of cricket yet to be played in this Test match and they shouldn’t overconfident.

New Zealand hold the cards.

“I hope I don’t have to bat again,” Boult said with a grin. “If I do my job we won’t be chasing too much. It’s a very good wicket (and) we know that we have to be on the ball.

“We can’t be walking around feeling we’re well ahead of the game because there is a lot of cricket to be played.”
