After going wicketless in the first innings, R. Ashwin rebounded in the second innings and went on to grab a total of 7 wickets to dismantle the Windies batting line-up. He was the one who took the much awaited last two wickets and to seal the game for India. He performed quite well and went onto display that why he is called one of the best spinners in India.
We have a look at how R. Ashwin’s scalps in the second innings against the West Indies cricket team:
His first prey of the match was the settled batsman Rajendra Chandrika who edged one to the wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha who grabbed the chance after fumbling it. Ashwin did not have to wait for another wicket as in his next over itself he dismissed Jermaine Blackwood for a golden duck. This was the second duck for Blackwood of the game.
Ashwin’s next wicket was the big fish Marlon Samuels who was stick at the one end of the crease. Samuels failed to reach the pitch of the ball and got bowled after a well made half century. KL Rahul played a key role in Ashwin’s next wicket as he as he grabbed a superb catch to dismiss Roston Chase on a score of 8.
His next two victims were Shane Dowrich and Captain Jason holder. The former was judged blocking the ball in front of the stumps whereas the latter and was bowled due to a big gap between bat and pad.
After this, the Indian team had to wait for an hour to get another wicket as Bishoo and Brathwaite shared a partnership of 95 runs amongst themselves. Ashwin provided the much-needed wicket of Bishoo followed by the last wicket of Gabriel in-form of bowled.
R Ashwin provided crucial breakthroughs to the team as he was present whenever the team was stuck in a difficult position. He proved that going wicketless in the first innings was just a small mistake which will never be repeated again.
He was also awarded Man of the Match award for his all-round effort in the game.
