Before the second ODI against New Zealand, India’s fielding coach R Sridhar said that the team is looking to develop specialist fielders who can field at any position according to the situation. And Axar Patel’s brilliant catch in the second match has proved that the process is going right so far.
The left-arm spinner took a one-handed catch to end Anton Devcich’s innings. What was even more special about the catch was the fact that Patel caught the ball with his right hand. Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah bowled a slower one and Devcich tried to steer over the man at short fine leg. However, the shot had no force in it and could not cover the distance but it still had the pace to fly over Patel. But the all-rounder ran back from his position and timed his jump to his wrong side to perfection to take a one-handed screamer.

Meanwhile, batting first, New Zealand failed to capitalise on a strong start and could post only 242 runs. They were at 202 for 3 by the end of 40th overs but some fine bowling by the Indian team and superb fielding restricted the visitors to a low total. Kane Williamson top-scored for the visitors with 118 runs.
