In this cricket-crazy nation, cricketers are treated like a demigod and their personal milestones are celebrated no less than a victory. And it was on full display during the first Test between India and England at Rajkot.
Every run scored by local boy Cheteshwar Pujara drew huge applause from the fans and the batsman gave the fans enough reasons to celebrate by playing a good knock. However, the thousands of fans and his wife and father who were also attending the match had their heart in mouth when the batsman was given out on 86. Facing left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari, the Saurashtra batsman missed the line of the ball and it hit him on his thighs. The English players went up in unison and the umpire gave the decision in their favour.
However, Pujara was convinced that the ball was missing the stumps and reviewed the decision straight away. Replays showed that the Indian batsman was right and the decision was overturned.
As expected, the whole stadium erupted into joy after the decision was overturned but Pujara’s wife stole the show with her dramatic celebration. Delighted with the decision, she started jumping and clapping.
Here is a clip of the celebration:

Meanwhile, the Indian team has given a strong reply to England’s huge total. After losing Gautam Gambhir early on the third day, Pujara and Murali Vijay have added 160 runs for the second wicket to propel the hosts to 228 for 1 at tea break.
