Video – The Day Mahendra Singh Dhoni Won Hearts With His Sportsmanship

Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a worshipped individual not just for his ability to win games alone. Over the due course of his career, Dhoni has time and again been involved in episodes which put the game in a brighter light. India’s most successful captain till date, he has been a great ambassador of the game with his larger than life attitude and his sportsmanship remains top notch.

An instance of Dhoni’s inspiring character was witnessed on October 25, 2015 in an ODI against South Africa at Mumbai. The game was a series decider between the two heavyweights as the series had been evenly poised till that very moment. The equation was pretty simple indeed- the winner would take it all.

After losing the toss and fielding first, Dhoni had a complete off day as the skipper, with his bowlers being massacred by the Proteas batsmen. As many as three South African batsmen in Quinton De Kock, Faf du Plessis and AB De Villiers registered centuries as the visitors piled up a mountainous 438-4 in 50 overs.

The moment of the game, however, was witnessed in the 43rd over of South Africa’s innings with Faf du Plessis at the crease. The stylish batsman was unbeaten on exactly 100 when Axar Patel came in to bowl. It had been a rather hot and humid day, and that had taken its toll on du Plessis, as he had been cramping ferociously and was in considerable pain.

Despite that, du Plessis carried on, and in the 43rd over, was brutal towards Axar Patel as he belted him for 24 runs. On the fifth ball, as du Plessis slog swept Patel for a six, he cramped a muscle or two in his leg and was immediately down, yelling in pain.

Watching this, skipper MS Dhoni walked in from behind the stumps and held his leg, in a bid to treat him till the South African physiotherapist arrived at the ground. Dhoni was seen treating du Plessis in order to ensure that the batsman was relieved of his pain even for a bid.

This gesture from Dhoni won million hearts across the globe as it was an ideal instance of an opposition captain showing respect to a player. India eventually lost the game by more than 200 runs, but Dhoni’s humble gesture earned him a lot of respect. Check out the video of that incident below.
