In the history of cricket, there are many rivalries that we enjoyed. Sourav Ganguly and Andrew Flintoff’s shared one of the famous rivalries in their illustrative cricket career.

In 2001, Nasser Hussain led visiting England drew the six-match ODI series against India. With India leading the series 3-2 before the final ODI in Mumbai, England produced a rollicking performance to defy the host from a series win. Marcus Trescothick scored 95 and captain Nasser Hussain and allrounder Andrew Flintoff scored 41 and 40 respectively that helped England to set a competitive target of 255.

Captain Sourav Ganguly, who was the leading the chase, scored 80 was bamboozled by Ashley Giles in the 37th over. India were 191 for 4. From there India needed 64 runs with 6 wickets in hand.

But, England bowlers, especially Andrew Flintoff and part-time spinner Micheal Vaughan produced fabulous spells that helped England to take four wickets. Pacer Andrew Caddick also sneaked in the 46th over and took the most important wicket of Ajit Agarkar, whose stay at the crease could have helped India to win the match. An easy match for India turned a mouthwatering one, thanks to England bowlers.

Dinesh Mongia and Mohammad Kaif scored 35 and 20, but Vaughan and Flintoff did not let them proceed further.

As the tail started Ajay Ratra, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble tried but failed to soak up the pressure and got out.

All-rounder Andrew Flintoff produced a remarkable performance in the fag end of the game. He ran out Anil Kumble. Meanwhile, Hemang Badani tried his best to carry India to a victory but his 32 balls 27 had gone in vain as the tailenders cleaned up by the English bowlers.

Flintoff, who kept India on their toes throughout the match, had taken off his jersey to make a vociferous celebration after taking the wicket of Srinath.  

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was not happy with Flintoff’s celebration. He had to wait for six months to hit back at Flintoff.

In the famous 2002 NatWest trophy, India chased down England 325 runs target with two wickets in hand. Flintoff was delivering the final over of the match India were need two runs. Zaheer Khan and Mohammad Kaif, the hero of the match, were at the crease. Zaheer Khan was at the striking end. From the first two deliveries no run came. 2 needed from four balls. Flintoff gave a full toss to Zaheer, who pushing  the ball to cover stole a single, there was an overthrow Kaif and Zaheer ran for second single to ensure the highest ever ODI victory in international by then. Flintoff bowed down his head placing his hand on two knees, Sourav Ganguly, at the famous Lord’s balcony took off his shirt and released his anger on Flintoff and entire England team.
