Murali Vijay has been a much improved batsman since the last couple of years. The Indian test opener has numerously played knocks filled with utter courage, grit and determination. His discipline and concentration have definitely fetched him with great rewards. After prospering in testing conditions of South Africa, England and Australia, Vijay finally earned an ODI recall for the tour of Zimbabwe.
Speaking post his selection, Vijay said that it was nothing else, but sheer hard work that took him closer to his destination. The batsman from Tamil Nadu emphasized on the fact that working hard on his fitness helped him greatly.
“I always thought of making it to the team if I got runs. I am happy to be picked in the team and feel my hard work has paid off,” Vijay said. The basics remain the same and you still have to watch the ball till the end before essaying your strokes,” said Vijay.
“Fitness is something I have really worked on and it has paid rich dividends for me over the years. Apart from that, looking to concentrate for longer durations and backing my basics are areas that I stress on,” said the 31-year-old.
Vijay also said that scoring well helped him to get in a more positive frame of mind. “The runs I have scored have given me a lot of self-belief. When one starts scoring runs in a particular format, he automatically looks to replicate that in other formats as well, and that’s what I am looking to do,” said Vijay.
This will surely be Vijay’s best opportunity to leave an impression as he has never got an extended run in the shorter formats.
