Vijay Shankar has been Consistent and Earned his Spot: Virat Kohli

After ending the game on a high note despite the game ending in a draw, the Indian team will be raring to go hard at the visitors to go 1-0 up in the series when they take on Sri Lanka in the second Test starting from tomorrow at Nagpur. However, the man of the match from the last match Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shikhar Dhawan opted out from the second Test citing personal reasons. While Murali Vijay is already in the squad as an opener, inform Vijay Shankar was called in as the replacement for Bhuvneshwar.

The cricketer from Tamil Nadu, Vijay has been in tremendous form for his Ranji Trophy side on a consistent basis since he made his debut at the age of 21 against Vidarbha. He was also successful with the bat while playing for the India A side. Particularly strong on the leg side, Vijay also likes to play the lofted cover-drives and has a healthy average of 49.14 in the first-class matches.

Men in blue skipper Virat Kohli showered heaps of praise on the backup all-rounder in the press conference earlier today. Kohli stated that he had earned his spot by being consistent and the team management wanted to have a backup all-rounder ready with Hardik Pandya being the first preference, as it is an important aspect of the game when team India travels abroad. Virat further revealed that he was brought up in the set up to groom him and make him aware of how things are done and make him understand where he needs to improve as a player.

Vijay, who believes that it is always about giving the best in whatever opportunities you get was heard saying to TOI,

“It’s a dream come true for me. I want to thank my coaches Chakradhar Rao and S Balaji for having supported me right throughout my career. I always wanted to give my best in whatever cricket I play. I have never thought that if I do well in this tournament or competition, I will get picked at the next level. It’s always about giving my best and I’m eagerly looking forward to my maiden stint in the Indian dressing room.”

The 26-year Shankar has played 32 first-class matches and has scored 1671 runs with an average of 49.14. He is also very handy with the ball and can chip in with 10-12 overs and is brilliant outfield fielder. He has picked up 27 wickets in his first-class career so far.
