The 28-year-old Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar felt very disappointed after getting ruled out in the middle of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019. But he is now moving forward from that disappointment.
Due to some impressive performances with the bat in early 2019, Vijay Shankar earned an opportunity in the 15-member squad for the CWC 2019. He played three matches in that tournament before an injury forced him to miss out the remainder of that tournament. During the net practice, Jasprit Bumrah‘s yorker fractured his toe and that ended his journey in that tournament.
Shankar felt very disappointed at that time. But he is now moving on from that period.
Vijay Shankar recently told TOI, “It was a very disappointing time. Every player dreams of representing his country and so did I. It is hard to explain what I felt at that time. But then I can’t remain disappointed and depressed about it. I had to move forward,”
I was very happy with my performance against Pakistan – Vijay Shankar
The national selectors chose Vijay Shankar for the CWC 2019 as the no.4-positioned batsman. In that tournament, Shankar impressed with his bowling as he picked up two wickets (2/22) during the League Stage game against Pakistan.
Shankar wasn’t expecting to get the bowling duty in that situation when he bowled against Pakistan. But when received the ball, he tried to give his best.
He said, “I was very happy with my performance (against Pakistan). Standing on the field when the National Anthem was being played was a great feeling. Honestly, I was not expecting to bowl when I was handed the ball, but in such a situation, I just tried to give off my best and bowl tightly. There was a little bit of swing on offer and I wanted to make use of that. It was an unbelievable moment.”
I’m happy to contribute and deliver in whichever way I can
Apart from that game, Shankar didn’t bowl in that entire tournament. In three innings of that tournament, Shankar scored 58 runs with an average of 29.00.
Instead of getting disappointed for his freak injury, Vijay Shankar is happy with his contribution in that tournament.
Shankar added, “Before coming back from England, I had a talk with the coach and the support staff and it was a freak injury that saw me miss out on the festival. Yes, that’s what the World Cup is. But I have to accept these things and what is destined to happen will happen. I’m not disappointed with how things have happened. I’m happy to contribute and deliver in whichever way I can.”
Vijay Shankar is not setting any target in mind. He is just focusing to perform consistently whenever he is getting chances.
He said, “I don’t have a target in mind. Wherever I’m asked to bat, I’ll do that. I am happy to contribute in whichever I can. There is the domestic T20 tournament followed by the Ranji Trophy. So all I’m looking to do is to perform consistently.”
In the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019/20, Vijay Shankar scored 384 runs in 10 innings with an average of 54.85. He hit three half-centuries in that tournament and those were 91*, 72* and 90 runs against Bihar, Railways and Madhya Pradesh respectively.
