Virat Kohli admits he cried after MS Dhoni’s Test retirement 

The Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni decided to step down from the longest format of the game earlier in the Australian series. He announced his retirement after the draw in the third test and Virat Kohli was given the responsibility straight away.

However, Kohli who took over from Dhoni admitted that the last test for MS Dhoni made him emotional. He said that it came as a surprise to all. He felt after having played under him for so long, that he is not yet ready to take on the captaincy. He also added that Dhoni, who gave youngsters plenty of opportunities and groomed them well, will be missed.

The 32nd Test captain for India, Virat Kohli explained how surprised everyone was at his decision. Kohli explained that after the first time Dhoni told his decision to him, that he did not know what to do. He added that after reaching his hotel room, Anushka, a close friend, who was in Australia to watch the series was equally surprised as to why Dhoni decided to retire.


Kohli became emotional explaining his first moment as a permanent test captain. He said that after few days, Dhoni’s decision sunk in and that he realized that he will the next test captain for India and not just for a match or two. This was what made him burst out into tears he said. He also added that he would have never believed 10 years ago that he would become India’s test captain at the age of 26.

Kohli continued that his only dream was to play test cricket for India. He explained how every form of domestic cricket helped him to achieve his dream and more. He said, the moment at which he realized he was India’s next skipper, that all those memories flashed in front of and that it was an amazing feeling to be captaining India on the world stage.
