Virat Kohli Is Feeling The Pressure Of 1.3 Billion Indians, Could Fire Later In Series: Steve Waugh 1

Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh has stated Indian captain Virat Kohli has been under pressure as his poor run of form continued during the ongoing four-match Test series against Australia.

“It’s the first time he’s [Virat Kohli] been under pressure for a while. That was always going to be a key component of this Test series, how many runs Virat Kohli was going to score, Waugh told during a live session on his Facebook page.

The 51-year-old Waugh, who had played 168 Tests expressed the visitors had executed their plans well against star batsman before stating Kohli could come back in the remainder of the Test games.

“So far Australia have (contained him) very well, but I expect him to score runs later on. Australia have had good plans to him as well (but) he’s been a little bit muddled in his thinking,” Waugh added.

The 28-year-old Kohli, who was dismissed twice while offering no shots, had a dismal show against Australia in two Tests so far.

“That’s best shown by two of his dismissals where he let balls go against the spinners. That’s something he never would have done even in his junior cricket days,” Waugh further said.

The Delhi-born batsman has scored 0, 13, 12, 15 (40) at the average of 10 during the four innings of the Pune and Bangalore Test.

Kohli is ranked second after opposition captain Steven Smith in the MRF ICC Test Rankings has been in prolific form before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“I think he’s feeling the pressure of 1.3 billion Indians, wanting him to score runs and thinking he’s going to every time,” Waugh remarked.

In what seemed to be a controversial LBW decision that further did not sit well with the hosts’ fans during the second innings, Kohli (15 off 52 balls) trudged off the ground in anger when the umpire’s decision was upheld during India’s second innings on day three at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

“Kohli seems to be a little out of sorts at the moment,” Waugh concluded.

Earlier, Kohli registered his first-ever nought on home soil in Tests when he edged the wider ball from Mitchell Starc in Pune.
