Virat Kohli, India Test Skipper, Laughs Off At Ball Tampering Allegation
India Test skipper Virat Kohli believes the ball tampering allegation is a ploy to divert his focus from the ongoing Test series against England.
After a footage emerged from the drawn Test at Rajkot that showed Kohli shining the ball, English tabloid The Daily Mail accused the Indian star of applying saliva and residue from a sweet on the ball.
The tabloid reported:“Footage has emerged of India captain Virat Kohli appearing to shine the ball using residue from a sweet during his country’s draw with England in the first Test.”
“Television cameras caught Kohli, who finished on 49 not out on the final day in Rajkot, putting his right hand towards his mouth. The 28-year-old can be seen rubbing his fingers in his mouth, inside of which is a sweet. He then appears to shine one side of the ball,” it added.
However, Kohli expressed his surprise over the issue. Citing the example of ongoing series between Australia and South Africa, where Faf du Plessis was charged due to applying an artificial substance on the ball, Kohli said it’s being done just to take away his focus from the series. The right-handed batsman has been in red-hot form as he has scored 337 runs in two matches so far including 248 runs (167 and 81) in the second Test at Vizag.
“I think it is just to take focus away from the series, to be honest. It happened in Australia when South Africa won the Test series. I am surprised actually that the issue came up in Rajkot but there was no mention till you saw the result in Vizag,” Kohli said.
Commenting on the article published by the English daily, he said: “To me, the newspaper article does not matter over the decision of the ICC and we, as cricketers, respect that only. Allegations and speculations, I am not aware of those things. I was told the five days after that thing came out and I laughed it off. I don’t pay attention to all those things. If I was doing something, ICC would have spoken to me.
The third match of the series will start on November 26 at Mohali.
