The state association officially confirmed that it is Kohli who will lead the team and Ishant Sharma is the stand-in for the Indian skipper. Selectors were still keen to retain Gautam Gambhir as the captain as he has led Delhi in past four seasons but he himself asked selectors not to consider him for the job.

Kohli played his last domestic game for Delhi in 2013 when he led the team in the NKP Salve Trophy, which consisted of likes of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir as well.

It is to be noted that since Kohli will miss the whole season, it will Ishant who is expected to lead. As of now, Ishant is the regular member of the Test team, and if he retains his place, then he will miss the second phase of Ranji Trophy, which means that selectors might have to look for Gautam Gambhir again.

Reports have also suggested that they have kept Milind Kumar on standby and he might be given the duties in case Ishant is absent due to international commitments.
