After missing out on the big scores in most of the matches at the group stage, Harmanpreet Kaur made her mark just when the team needed her the most. India were reeling at 101 for 3 after 25 overs in the ongoing semifinal clash of the Women’s World Cup and had just 17 overs to turn things around to post a challenging total against defending champions Australia. However, given the situations, it was not going to be easy at all. With in-form Mithali Raj already back in the pavilion and Australian bowlers bowling a tight line on a pitch that was allowing the batswomen to go for their shots, India’s middle-order had its task cut out.
However, it was a one woman show after Mithali’s departure as Harmanpreet Kaur blew away Australia with one of the best-ever knocks in the World Cup. Harmanpreet reached her fifty off 64 balls but hit the top gear thereafter, scoring 49 runs in the next 29 balls to score her third One-Day International century. The 28-year old then slammed 71 runs off the next 25 balls to finish on 171 off just 115 deliveries. Her stunning knock was studded with a staggering 20 fours and 7 sixes. India posted a daunting 281 for 4 in the allotted 42 overs.
India men’s team captain, meanwhile, Virat Kohli joined the millions to congratulate Harmanpreet for her amazing knock. He also had a word of praise for the bowlers who have put India on top by reducing Australia to 21 for 3 in the eighth over. At the time of this article writing, the reigning champions were 101 for 3 in 19 overs.
“What an innings by @ImHarmanpreet and a brilliant effort by the bowlers also so far.. #INDvAUS @BCCIWomen #ICCWomensWorldCup2017,” the star batsman tweeted.
