This Is How Virat Kohli Is Proving Sachin Tendulkar’s Prediction Right
Almost 5 years ago, Sachin Tendulkar had made a bold prediction when Bollywood actor Salman Khan had asked him his pick who could break his incredible record of ODI centuries. Tendulkar had unhesitatingly backed his younger teammates Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to break his record.
“Kya lagta hai aapko? seedhe seedhe bolo nahi tod payega (what do you think of this, ok say that no one can do it),” the Bollywood star asked.
“I think those who can, are sitting in this room only,” Sachin had replied. “I can see those youngsters. Virat and Rohit are the ones. As long as an Indian breaks it, I don’t mind.”
Well, the claim by the legendary batsman seemed a bit absurd then. While Rohit was yet to cement his place in the team at that time, Kohli was just transforming himself into one of the best batsmen in the world after being in the shadow of some big names in the first three years of his career.
Fast forward to 2017 and one can now only get fascinated by Sachin’s prediction. While Rohit has not only cemented his place in the team, he has gone on to score 16 centuries in the 50-over cricket, Kohli has become the undisputed king of this format. The right-handed batsman has shown remarkable consistency in the format and enhanced his reputation even further when he scored his 30th ODI century in the fifth ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday (September 3).
With that century, Kohli has now equalled legendary batsman Ricky Ponting’s record of 30 centuries and is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar’s incredible tally of 49 tons. There is still a very long way to go before Sachin’s record even comes in sight but given Kohli’s stunning consistency over the past few years, not many would put their vote against him.
