West Indies batting great Brian Lara has lavished praise on current India skipper Virat Kohli, especially on his batting ability as he has plundered runs across all formats in international cricket before expressing Kohli has become an effective skipper.

“Kohli is one of the best batsmen in contemporary cricket and has his own style of batting. I am not the kind to rate players or compare him with anyone,” Lara was quoted as saying by ToI.

Lara, who played 131 Tests for the West Indies, expressed India has dominated at the home conditions and players like Kohli are the main reason behind the team’s success.

“Even in captaincy, he has his own style, which is proving to be very effective,” added Lara.

After Mahendra Singh Dhoni relinquished the captaincy, Kohli was appointed as India’s full-time skipper in the limited-overs. India won both the ODI and T20I series 2-1 in his first full series as captain.

The 28-year-old Kohli has also been praised by former cricketers for his exceptional run with the bat and aggressive style of captaincy, but some experts feel Kohli should be careful while taking crucial decisions during the game.

Lara, who amassed 11,953 Test runs at the average of 52.88, also hailed the legendary batsman Tendulkar for his overall contribution to the world cricket and particularly for India while mentoring the youngsters during his illustrious career.

“One should remember the impetus provided by the great Sachin (Tendulkar) while at his peak. He passed on a rich legacy to highly talented youngsters and they are ready to take on the world now,” concluded Lara.

The 47-year-old Trinidad-born Lara, who made his international debut in 1990, is in Hyderabad to enjoy golf sessions at the 18-hole golf course.

In the recent past, Lara admitted about his fascination for golf when he was 20.

Lara scored 22,358 runs in both Tests and ODIs and smashed 53 hundreds and 111 fifties overall.
