The Indian skipper Virat Kohli has asked the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI to consider Ravi Shastri for the post of Head Coach of Indian Cricket team, a report in Cricketnext suggests.
It has been learnt that Kohli met the members of CAC viz Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, who are in England, and delivered his wish to consider Shastri for the job. But it is to be noted that the former Indian all-rounder hasn’t applied for the post and is not eligible. It will be interesting to see whether BCCI and CAC are able to deny Kohli’s words or not.
Ravi Shastri worked as the director of team India for a period of two years. He took over the role ahead of the ODI series between India and England played in England in the year 2014. He got several extensions and finally, his role came to an end after the conclusion of 2016 T20 World Cup played in India.
The former BCCI President Anurag Thakur revamped the procedure last year and the Board invited applications for the post of Head Coach. Ravi Shastri was the strongest contender to take over the responsibility due to the fact he enjoys a good relation with Kohli but with Kumble jumping in at the eleventh hour, Shastri was sidelined and the former leggie was given the job for one year. This year again, BCCI opted for the same procedure and surprisingly Shastri didn’t apply. But Kohli still wants him in the role.
The procedure to select the new coach started from Thursday (June 8), when the members of CAC and BCCI CEO Rahul Johri met. They are expected to deliver their decision soon and latest reports suggest that they are likely to retain Anil Kumble, on basis of performance of Indian cricket team in last one year.
Apart from Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh, Richard Pybus and Tom Moody are in the race for the job. Former Australian pacer Craig McDermott, who also applied for the post isn’t eligible because his application was received after the due date.
The new coach might travel with Indian team to West Indies, for the limited overs series.
