Since inaugural ICC World T20, T20 cricket has truly come of age – Virat Kohli
Since the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, India haven’t won any ICC tournaments. Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India finished as the runners-up in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and the semifinalists in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. However, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 will be Kohli’s first T20 World Cup as a captain.

India won the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007 under then inexperienced captain MS Dhoni. That success was the beginning of Dhoni’s legendary journey as a leader. But after that tournament, India have never won another T20 World Cup trophy. However, India finished as the runners-up in the 2014 WT20 edition and semifinalists in the 2016 WT20 edition.
Virat Kohli wants to become the second Indian men’s captain to win the T20 World Cup trophy in the next year. He also wished to see the Indian women’s team win the earlier ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the same year.
Kohli added, “India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 when the format was new and the future a bit unknown. Since then, T20 cricket has truly come of age and it would be an honour to be the second Indian captain to lift the T20 World Cup trophy, and hopefully the third if the Indian women can win it earlier in 2020. I hope to see more of that when we come back to Australia next year.”
Indian women’s national cricket team haven’t won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup yet. Australia will also host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 but at earlier, from 21st February to 8th March 2020.
