Anil Kumble and five other candidates — Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput, and Dodda Ganesh have been shortlisted by the BCCI and will be interviewed by the three-member cricket advisory committee (CAC). Craig McDermott, the former Australian fast bowler had also sent an application but that arrived after the May 31 deadline.
The CAC — that comprises of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman is likely to meet in the next couple of days to finalise the interview schedule, as the BCCI is keen to appoint a new coach before the ICC Champions Trophy ends.
While Anil Kumble did exceptionally well as the head coach of the Indian team in terms of results there are consistent reports of there being trust issues between the players and the coach.
With these six names in contention for the role, it is being reported that Indian skipper Virat Kohli still prefers Ravi Shastri as the coach of the Indian team.
TOI reported that before the Indian team flew to London Kohli met Sachin and Laxman and suggested them to consider Shastri’s candidature and invite him for an interview. But Shastri who was denied the position last time hasn’t filed his application.
The reports further suggested that CAC will only interview Kumble, Sehwag, Moody and Pybus. While there is a slim possibility that the other two Indians who have been shortlisted – Rajput and Dodda Ganesh can be called for the interviews as well.
“The interview process would start from either Thursday evening or Friday onwards. The CAC would meet the candidates individually and take the call later,” the source added.
Kumble officially re-applied for the post – despite the BCCI having said there was no need for a formal application as he would be a “direct entry” into a final pool.
Kumble’s one-year contract was always due to end after the Champions Trophy, but instead of continuing a successful arrangement, the BCCI opted to advertise for fresh interviews. On a larger scale, this is thought to be because the BCCI was concerned by the feedbacks received by the players regarding Anil Kumble.
