Virender Sehwag names two legends as his favorite captains
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has been a complete entertainer be it batting or his epic one-liners in twitter and also in his commentary.
On the sidelines of Kolkata test, BCCI has organised an event to commemorate the 500 tests of India which has seen the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev and VSS Laxman attend besides Virender Sehwag.
After the win at Kolkata test, former wicketkeeper-batsman Deepdas Gupta asked Sehwag about his favourite skipper in the event to which the legendary dashing batsman has replied without any second thought, the two stalwarts of Indian cricket- Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble.
It is a known fact that Virender Sehwag has grown into one of the most feared batsmen in the world under Sourav Ganguly as Dada has backed him despite his performances to go for the kill in the opening overs.
This has made Virender Sehwag a dangerous batsman as he was given freedom by Ganguly in his early days which was followed by Anil Kumble later from 2007. Ganguly is known for his backing of future stars during his captaincy which saw the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, and Harbhajan Singh become the next generation legends for Indian cricket.
“You look at modern-day openers who are criticised for not getting runs quickly. It was all started by Virender Sehwag and Mathew Hayden. To a certain extent even Justin Langer, but in Tests, these two changed the definition of batting,” Ganguly said.
Despite Dhoni winning all the major trophies for India, Sourav Ganguly is regarded as the greatest Indian captain for his development of Indian team from spot-fixing ruins to one of the best teams by the end of his reign as captain.
Virender Sehwag was one of the players who excelled the most under Sourav Ganguly when he was captain as he became a cornerstone of the Indian team in both tests and ODIs.
“I never had fear because my captain (Ganguly) would always back me. I also knew that the batsmen after me were all great. The likes of Rahul (Dravid), Sachin (Tendulkar), Sourav (Ganguly), (VVS) Laxman, M.S. Dhoni were there, so I could relax,” Sehwag said.
