After receiving widespread criticism for trolling 20-year old Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur over a video she shared last year, former India opener Virender Sehwag has now said his tweet was not intended for Kaur.
Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, has caused quite a stir after starting an online campaign against the violence that took place in Ramjas College last week.
She showed her protest by changing her Facebook profile picture holding a placard which read: “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP”.
As expected, her campaign against the ABVP divided the social media into two parts and Sehwag took the side which was against Kaur’s campaign. Trolling the student over a video she shared last year, saying that ‘Pakistan didn’t kill my father, the war killed him’, Sehwag tweeted:”I didn’t score two triple centuries, my bat did”.
The former batsman, who has made a habit of making a joke out of everything, was severely criticised for his tweet, with many even accusing him of bullying the 20-year old. However, Sehwag has dismissed all the claims and has said his tweet was not intended to hurt anyone.
Speaking to India Today, he said:“My tweet wasn’t intended for Gurmehar. It was plain fun but people construed the other way.”
Meanwhile, Kaur has decided to end her campaign after allegedly receiving rape threats for the posts against the ABVP. On Tuesday, she pulled out of a march by teachers at the Delhi University students against campus violence.
