Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag wished a very happy birthday to India’s former great batsman Sunil Gavaskar. The maverick right-handed batsman turns 67 today.
Gavaskar was a great batsman in his heyday. His technique made his defense impeccable . He was on of those batsmen who never wore the helmet until latter stages of his career, but still he excelled against formidable fast bowlers of West Indies. Gavaskar frustrated them with his batting technique and skills.
He has scored 13 hundred against the West Indies and has 65 plus average in 27 Test matches against the famous pace quartet of West Indies.
When players in modern day cricket often get hit on the head or body, Gavaskar never got hit on the head or other parts of his body because he has supreme technique.
Gavaskar was the first batsman who scored more than 10000 runs in Test cricket and has 34 hundred to his credit.
He anchored India’ s famous victory against West Indies chasing a 400 plus total in 1971 which was the highest run chase in the history of cricket. The victory was more significant than India’s world cup victory in 1983 as it came in Test cricket against the invincible team of the world.
Sehwag in his playing days was a great Test batsman. He scored two triple hundred which only three other batsmen of the world could have scored.
Sehwag has scored runs at ana average of 49.
He compared Sunil Gavaskar with the popular Hindi movie Shoaly and termed cricketer as a film. Hindi movie Sholay was a great hit in 1975.
What Gavaskar did without helmet, its difficult for ppl these days to do with all equipments. If cricket were a film,Sunil Gavaskar is Sholay
