VVS Laxman Backs Dhoni To Make It To 2019 World Cup Squad
Former Indian cricketer and commentator VVS Laxman has backed Mahendra Singh Dhoni to play in 2019 World Cup. However, Harbhajan Singh has added that experience comes into the picture, but form should be taken as the paramount for selection into the team.
MS Dhoni has been under scanner over the past few months, but despite his consistent performances, the veteran keeper failed to convince some of the critics. Earlier even Laxman expressed his concerns over the inclusion of the 36-year old into the T20 side.
But the stylish Hyderabadi batsman has insisted that the experience of Dhoni would come in handy for captain Virat Kohli during the mega event that will be played in England.
“I don’t think Kohli is protecting Dhoni. He’s above all that and he has a very important role to play in the 2019 World Cup. Kohli is handling Dhoni very well; much like (how) Sourav handled Sachin when he resigned from captaincy,” Laxman told Aaj Tak.
“Kohli is giving the right opportunities to MS Dhoni and he takes help from him. He has no ego and I feel Dhoni will have to play a huge hand.”
MS Dhoni will continue playing in the limited overs formats as he was picked for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka later this month. But Harbhajan Singh thinks that the former skipper should keep on performing to ensure he starts in the team during the World Cup.
“One year is a lot and in Indian cricket, there are a lot of changes every day. Experience is there but form and everything matters. Dhoni is a big player but (the) World Cup is far off and Dhoni has to keep performing to be a part of the 11,” said Harbhajan.
Despite the criticism he received in recent times, Dhoni remains an integral part of the ODI team. But his inability to play against quality oppositions in swinging conditions seems to be irking the critics over his inclusion for the mega event.
