VVS Laxman Clears Rumours of MS Dhoni Playing a Part in his Retirement
Former Indian stylish batsman VVS Laxman has cleared the air of MS Dhoni playing a part in his retirement. Laxman didn’t have the best of Australia tours in 2011 as he only scored 155 runs in the four Test matches at an average of 19.37. Thus, Laxman decided to call it a day from the International circuit. However, Laxman had jokingly said it is difficult to reach MS Dhoni when he was asked whether he communicated his retirement plans to the Indian skipper.
Although, VVS Laxman never anticipated that his casual statement will put him under troubled waters. The media went on to take Laxman’s statements in a wrong way and there were reports of a rift between VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni. In fact, it was also speculated that MS Dhoni played a part in VVS Laxman retirement.
It was all good between MS and VVS.
“After I informed the media of my decision to retire, the questions flowed. ‘Have you informed your teammates?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Have you spoken to Dhoni, what did he have to say?’ ‘Everyone knows how difficult it is to reach Dhoni,’ I joked. Little did I realize that this would trigger the first and only controversy of my cricketing career,” Laxman wrote in his book 281 and beyond..
“I had unwittingly provided fodder to the media, who started to speculate that I had retired in a huff because MS and I had differences, that there was a rift between us. It wasn’t funny at the time, but one of the headlines the following day read, ‘VVS, retired hurt’. I waited for the end of the Test and then went to the hotel to thank every teammate and member of the support staff individually.
However, MS Dhoni was always cool as a cucumber and cleared the same with VVS Laxman. Dhoni asked Laxman to take it easy as he is used to these types of unwanted controversies.
“When I met MS, he took one look at me and burst out laughing. ‘Laxman Bhai, you are not used to all these controversies, but I am. Don’t take this to heart. We all know that sometimes, facts need not come in the way of a good story.’ I was once again struck by his maturity, his simplicity, and how easily he had put me at ease,” he added.
Meanwhile, it is well known the media can create a wildfire from a little spark. Thus, the players need to be wary of their statements as even the jokes can be taken seriously.
