VVS Laxman Has an Idea For India on How to Win New Zealand Test Series
In New Zealand, Virat Kohli and Co. will play the first away Test series since the beginning of ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2019-21. It will be an important series for India, not only for gaining points in WTC but also ending the tour on a positive note. Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman has a strategy for India’s success in Test series which will go underway from 21st February in Wellington.
The former cricketer believes that the young opening batsman will face a big challenge against New Zealand bowling line up. He expressed that India’s opening pair need to set up a strong partnership to set the game in India’s favour.
“The biggest challenge will be for the young openers. Mayank Agarwal did not have a great ODI series, he also bagged a pair with India A. And then, whether it is Prithvi Shaw or Shubman Gill, they are inexperienced. If we have to put pressure on the home team in their own conditions, you have to score big in the first innings. A lot will depend on how they counter the new ball attack of New Zealand,” Laxman told Star Sports.
Prithvi Shaw or Shubman Gill? Opening partner of Mayank Agarwal:
Mayank Agarwal had a poor outing in his debut ODI series against New Zealand. Also, in the practice game, he lost his wicket early in the first innings while he found his form back in the second inning as he scored 88 off 99 balls in Hamilton.
On the other hand, both Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill were also sent back early in the warm-up game. However, Shaw scored 39 off 31 but Gill was dismissed cheaply for the second time in a row.
Thus, Shaw has more chances to be the opening partner of Agarwal. The three-day practice game also witnessed Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami back in the form and also, middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari showed his grit with the bat, scoring a century.
