Sunil Gavaskar is one of the greatest openers in India as well as the World’s cricket history. His flawless technique and gritty attitude made him the most valuable cricketer for India in the 70s and 80s. With his unerring consistency, the opening batsman build match-winnings for India. Being the lynchpin for India in his era, his wicket was precious for any opposition.
Perhaps, Sunil Gavaskar wanted to play like the current Team India’s opener Rohit Sharma. He has hailed Rohit for his attacking batting. The veteran said that just like Rohit hits the ball to boundaries from the very first over, he also wanted to similarly score runs. But the circumstances as well Gavaskar’s lack of confidence in his ability didn’t allow him to play freely.
Circumstances Didn’t Allow Me To Bat Like Rohit Sharma: Sunil Gavaskar
“The way you see a Rohit Sharma opening the batting in one-day cricket, Test cricket smashing from the first over. That is what I wanted to play. Circumstances and of course lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do that.
However, Sunil Gavaskar is delighted that Rohit has set high bars for the next generation. When he see the youngsters, playing their heart out, he is over the moon.
But when I see the next generation doing it, I am absolutely over the moon, I love watching the next generation because there you see progress. You see how they are setting the bar higher for the next generation,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today’s Boria Majumdar on the latest episode of Inspiration.
Rohit Sharma’s top-notch career:
The revolution in Rohit’s batting came when he was promoted to the opening position in Team India in 2013. He went on to score heavily for the team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 where he also registered his maiden ODI double hundred.
Since then, Rohit’s bat has been doing miracles for the national team. He is currently the second-highest T20I scorer and second-best batsman in ODIs. The hitman is the only cricketer to have three double ODI hundreds in cricket history. Last year, he achieved another unique feat. In the World Cup 2019, he became the first batsman to score five centuries in the mega event breaking the old records.
