With just over 6 months left for the ICC 2019 World Cup qualifications to be sealed for the top 8 teams, it is now a do or die situation for the West Indies. As of this moment, with the third ODI against England underway, Jason Holder’s side is currently ranked 9th and could miss out on an automatic qualification if they don’t rise up to the 8th spot by the end of September, which is the cut-off date.
With a series against Pakistan scheduled, that could determine the fate of the Calypso Kings big time. It is a matter of shame that a side which won the first two editions of the ICC Cricket World Cup now needs to scrape to qualify for the main event. Skipper Jason Holder recently addressed the press and admitted that his side wanted to win it for the public.
“Obviously, the patience is running out with the public,” Holder said. “But we’re still human beings. We’re very young on the international circuit.”You’ve got to bear with them a bit, but it’s important we learn as quickly as possible.”
Speaking about the ongoing ODI series against England, Holder said that his side had done well, but that wasn’t reflected by the results. “I’m definitely encouraged,” Holder said. “We just need to string it all together. In the first game, we obviously showed glimpses that we can compete. But it’s just those pivotal moments we just need to seize and I think that’s maybe where our inexperience comes to the fore.”
“In the last game, we were the main bowler short with Shannon Gabriel pulling up after his second or third over. That set us back a little bit. There’s obviously still a lot to play for. Every point is crucial now, going into the World Cup qualification and that’s the way we’re seeing this game.”
