Waqar Younis took the names of Indian batting mainstays Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane and said these ‘notable’ performers of India would provide a good contest against Australia in the four-match Test series.
The India and Australia series is one of the most anticipated duals of world cricket which is followed all across the globe with keen interest.
Waqar Younis: Indian Batting Impressive With Notable Test Performers Cheteshwar Pujara And Ajinkya Rahane
Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis expressed his eagerness to follow the four-match Test series between the two sides and also predicted an evenly-matched contest because of the return of Steve Smith and David Warner. Waqar Younis said notable performers Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane would ensure the duel will be a good contest.
“The Indian batting is also pretty impressive with some notable test performers like Pujara and Rahane so I expect good contests,” Waqar Younis told a YouTube channel according to news agency PTI.
Regular skipper Virat Kohli will play only the first test and will head home missing the last three Tests owing to the birth of the first child. The first test will be a day-night affair and will be India’s first overseas pink ball test.
Waqar Younis: India Will Feel Absence Of Rohit And Ishant Sharma
But the former captain of Pakistan does not doubt that the absence of Virat Kohli after the first Test in Adelaide and Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma who are in danger of missing at least first two matches. However, their participation will make a difference to Indian chances of winning the series.
Virat Kohli will be on paternity leave after the Adelaide Test while batsman Rohit Sharma and pacer Ishant Sharma are yet to recover from their respective injuries and will join only after the second Test of the four-match rubber.
“Rohit is a top act while Ishant has a lot of experience and wickets behind him and they can’t make it for the Test matches, India will feel their absence,” he said.
Cheteshwar Pujara was the highest scorer for India in tests with 521 runs including three hundred in four Tests the last time India toured there in 2018-19 averaging 74.43. It was Cheteshwar Pujara and the fast bowlers who scripted India’s first-ever Test series victory on Australian soil. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah took 21 wickets averaging 17 while Mohammed Shami took 16 wickets to give Australian batsmen a hard time.
Waqar Younis said Australia would come back hard at India as they will try to avenge the defeat in the 2018 Test series at home. Australia lost both ODI and test series, and it was India’s maiden test series victory in Australian soil.
“Australia are playing at home and have developed a good pace attack and with David Warner and Steve Smith back they appear to be very strong but India also has some good pace bowlers who have come up rapidly and they bowled well on their last tour to Australia,” Waqar added.
