Warwickshire County has appointed former England batter Jonathan Trott as the assistant coach for the 2022 season. Jonathan Trott, who ended his playing career in 2018 after winning five trophies with the Bears and 52 Test and 62 List A caps with England, initially worked as a consultant with Warwickshire. Scotland had earlier roped in former England batsman Jonathan Trott as ‘Batting Lead’ for the 2021 T20I World Cup.

The 40-year-old, who won more than 100 England caps, returned to Edgbaston last April as a batting consultant. Warwickshire County’s 50 overs team is called the Warwickshire Bears and its T20 team is the Birmingham Bears.

Jonathan Trott Returns To Warwickshire As Assistant Coach For 2022 Season

Warwickshire County’s full red ball fixture for 2022 is out as they look to defend the title they claimed in September – the eighth in their history. Warwickshire County will begin the defence of their County Championship title on home soil against Surrey when the cricket season begins in April.

Warwickshire County, who lifted both the County Championship title and the Bob Willis Trophy at the end of last year, make up a part of the ten-team First Division as the ECB restore the original structure after the last couple of years of restructuring, largely due to Covid-19.

“It’s a great privilege to extend my time working as a coach for my home county. We’ve got an excellent set of players here and seeing them win the Championship at Edgbaston was an incredibly proud day,” Trott said in a statement.

“However, we want to build on this success. We’ve got a proud history of winning trophies at Warwickshire and I want to support the players and give them the best chance of achieving much more success in the future,” he added.

Jonathan Trott is now working with the Warwickshire men’s squad as they continue the final stage of indoor training in preparation for their defence of the County Championship, which begins on April 7 at home to Surrey. Skipper Will Rhodes admits Warwickshire must get used to having a target on their back when they make their defence of the County Championship this summer.

In 2003 Jonathan Trott made a century on his first-class debut as an opener for Warwickshire county against a strong Sussex attack and in 2009 he made a century on his Test debut at The Oval.

Jonathan Trott went on to play a key part in England retaining the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11 – the first time they had won a Test series there in nearly a quarter of a century – with centuries at Adelaide and Melbourne and the defeat of India in England the following summer to assume the No.1 Test ranking. His standing as the finest No. 3 England had possessed for many years was confirmed.

While Jonathan Trott’s ODI average in excess of 50 is substantially higher than any regular England player in ODI history, his strike rate of around 75 was a source of constant discussion – never more so than during the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Jonathan Trott retired in 2018 from all formats with a haul of 18,662 first-class runs and more than 12,000 more in List A and T20 cricket. He debuted in international cricket in 2007(T20s) and 2009 (Tests, ODIs) while his last international Test match came in 2015. He played 52 Tests and 68 ODIs apart from 7 T20Is scoring 3835 runs in Tests averaging 44.08 and 2819 runs in ODIs averaging 51.25.
