Wasim Akram is known to be among the most modest personalities in cricket. When he criticizes someone, there surely must be a deep motive behind it. Recently, the Sultan of Swing was critical about the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the way it treated its players. Akram said that the PCB should change its approach and stop treating the players like “school children”.
The legendary fast bowler was quoted saying, “Having discipline is one thing but too much stress on it can also lead to some players losing confidence because of it.” “Our players unfortunately are being treated like schoolboys in the name of discipline and this is hurting their confidence and growth as professional sportsmen and persons.”
Along with Akram was Shoaib Akhtar, the controversial former pacer. Akhtar too had a similar view and completely agreed with Akram. The two were talking to the press at the launch of the Wasim Akram Foundation in Karachi. The premier goal of the foundation is to provide education to under privileged children.
Akram also felt that lack of socializing on tours by the Pakistani players was leading to a fall in the confidence of the players. Recently in a talk show “Cricket Legends” Akram spoke about the great Imran Khan and how the 1992 World Cup winning captain gave the players full freedom.
Once Akram was done, Akhtar too chipped in and was took no offence in bashing PCB. Akhtar said, “Players need to be given freedom and a chance to become superstars through their performances and attitude. It is only when a player becomes a superstar that he becomes a brand and that will only increase the value of Pakistan cricket for others.”
Akram also discussed about the team’s chances in Sri Lanka and was quoted saying, “Sri Lanka is one of the toughest places to tour and they are very strong on their home grounds. It will not be easy for our bowlers and it should be a tough series for Pakistan.”
