The world of cricket has seen some absolutely unbelievable catches on the field especially after the advent of T20 cricket. But perhaps none of those catches were as good as the one taken by Brad Currie on Friday night during the T20 Blast clash between Sussex and Hampshire.
Brad Currie was making his T20 debut and he could not have asked for a better start to his career. Playing for Sussex, he picked up 3 wickets for just 27 runs in his 4 overs before taking the unbelievable catch. Such was the catch that the whole crowd was on its feet while the commentators were almost speechless. When the video of his catch was released on social media, it became viral in no time with many calling it the greatest catch of all time.
Chasing 183 for victory, Hampshire required 23 runs from 11 balls. All-rounder Benny Howell was looking dangerous and was batting on 25 off just 14 balls. And when he hit Tymal Mills for a flat and well timed shot towards deep backward square leg, it looked almost certain that the ball would reach the boundary for a crucial six.
But before it could happen, Brad Currie did something unexpected and unbelievable just near the boundary, making commentator Mark Butcher go: “Oh he’s got it. He’s … oh my goodness me. Did you ever … see anything like that?”
Just before the ball could reach the boundary, the 24-year old came flying in from the left side and took the catch with his left hand while being airborne. His reaction to the catch was even more incredible as he stood up nonchalantly as if it was just a normal thing.
“I think you just act on instinct,” Currie said after the match. “Out came a flying version of me and it just sort of stuck.”
