Following the sparkling innings, the disappointment hit South African batsman Dean Elgar, who was solely distraught, as he became the only Proteas batsman in Test history to have been dismissed on 199, as his teammates further looked distraught in the dressing room including debutant Aiden Markram.
Following the rush of the adrenaline, the 30-year-old Elgar displayed super temperament before trudging off the ground in utter disbelief.
According to the stats, the top-scorer for the Proteas in the ongoing Test, Elgar has subsequently become the latest victim in the five-day format and overall 10th cricketer to get dismissed on 199.
The emotions were running high when debutant Aiden Markram has his hand on his head while sporting the sunglasses before skipper Faf du Plessis rose from his seat to partner Temba Bavuma in the middle during the first Test on Day Two at their backyard.
Pertinently, the 22-year-old right-handed Markram was sent back to the pavilion on day one owing to the mix-up when he was three short away from his maiden Test debut hundred in Potchefstroom. South Africa declared the innings on 496 for three after facing 146 overs.
A bitter pill to swallow for an elegant stroke-maker, Elgar walked out from the park as the sportsmanship was equally shown by some of the Bangladesh fielders, who were quick to give a pat on his back. The calm and composed character, Elgar’s hard-fought innings got cut short when the short-pitched delivery from Mustafizur Rahman took the top edge of the bat which eventually ballooned up in the air – to find Mominul Haque completing a simple catch at mid-wicket.
Elgar faced 388-balls to score 199, as his double hundred was snatched away by just a-run when the red-ball got big onto him.
Moreover, the newly-appointed head coach Ottis Gibson alongside his wards looked dejected after half-hearted pull shot saw nonchalant batsman Elgar shut down his eyes before started off to return to the dressing room. Known for his adaptability, Elgar would not like to watch the TV replays.
However, his innings was applauded by the spectators when Elgar waves his bat before crossing past the padded-up boundary line, as du Plessis acknowledged his knock while walking into the ground. Before falling on the brink of double hundred mark, the brilliant innings saw Elgar smashing 15 boundaries and three maximums at the strike-rate of 51.24.
Earlier, KL Rahul was the previous victim and 9th overall against England when he was dismissed by leg-spinner Adil Rashid on 199 after being caught by Jos Butler at cover point region. The Karnataka-born batsman Rahul faced 311 deliveries to score his 199.
