The Independence Cup featuring Pakistan and World XI got underway at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore yesterday, and the home team has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series after defeating the World XI side by 20 runs. It was a pretty impressive show by the Pakistan who after posting a commendable 197 on the board after batting first restricted their oppositions to 177 in their allotted 20 overs.
Riding on an exceptional 86 by middle order batsman Babar Azam and a quick fire 38 of 20 balls by former captain Shoaib Malik, Pakistan posted a daunting total on the board, and the World XI side needed to bat out of their skin to reach the target. Among the World XI bowlers, Thisara Perera was the pick of the bowlers with a couple of wickets but went for as many as 51 runs in his allotted four overs.
World XI got off to a relatively brisk start with Tamim Iqbal, and Hashim Amla scoring runs at more than eight runs per over in the powerplay. But the inclusion of Rumman Raees changed the complexion of the match as the left-arm pacer removed both the openers in the same over to peg the visitors back.
There were useful contributions from most of the middle order batsmen, but none could convert their starts into a big one. The Pakistan bowlers bowled in the right areas and didn’t allow the opposition batsmen to get under it on a consistent basis. In the final over of the match Pakistan speedster Hasan Ali bowled an exceptional toe crushing Yorker which left former Windies captain imbalanced.
It was a quick delivery from the fast bowler and Sammy had no clue how to counter it. The ball came tailing back to him, and he fell awkwardly on his shoes. Hasan went running towards him and gave his hand which showed the sportsman spirit of both teams. Eventually, Pakistan returned winners by 20 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three match series.
