Just a few days ago, ESPN had announced MS Dhoni took the 20th spot in their World Fame 100 list of sportspersons and Chennai fans, on Sunday, showed just why the former India skipper ranks so high in the list which features global sports stars. Dhoni is gearing up to lead Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, starting on March 23. The defending champions will kickstart their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Dhoni is a crowd favourite in Chennai and the reasons are obvious. He is with the franchise since 2008 barring the two seasons he played for Rising Pune Supergiant after the Chennai-based franchise was suspended in 2015. The former India skipper has led the team in all the seasons so far and looks good to lead them for at least a few more years.
Last tear, Dhoni’s stardom in Chennai would have only grown after he led the team to the third IPL title. There were apprehensions all around that the Super Kings would struggle to replicate their past success in the comeback season. Two-year absence, team full of players aged over 30, home venue shifted but in the end nothing could stop Chennai Super Kings from concluding their comeback season in a fairy-tale manner. They beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to lift the title.

And as Dhoni & Co. gear up to become the first team to win the title for a record fourth time, the fans have shown their incredible support. On Sunday, thousands of fans thronged the Chepauk just to see a practise session. But the loudest cheer was saved for ‘thala’ MS Dhoni.
Not many get that kind of reception even in a game but then again Dhoni’s stardom in Chennai is unparalleled and the fans proved it once again.

Former New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings allrounder Scott Styris’ tweet perfectly summed up Dhoni’s reception. Soon after Chennai Super Kings posted the video, Styris tweeted:
