England star Joe Root, on Monday, stunned the cricketing world with his shot selection on the very first ball of the fourth day in the ongoing first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston.
England began the proceedings with the bat on day four on the backfoot. Having lost both of their openers on the previous day, England were 2 down for 28 runs when Joe Root and Ollie Pope came out to bat. The precarious situation, however, could not stop Joe Root from going for an audacious shot.
What makes his shot selection even more incredible was that it was the very first ball of the day. Root was up against one of the world’s best pacers and Australia skipper Pat Cummins. The right-arm pacer bowled a length ball around off stump before Root decided to stun the cricketing world by playing a reverse scoop.
He changed his position quickly and tried to hit the ball over the fielders behind the stumps but failed to make any contact. And in the very next over, he played the same shot against Scott Boland and was rewarded with a six.
Here is a clip of those two shots from Joe Root:

Root has had a good outing in the ongoing Test so far and would be looking to score big in the second innings. Thanks to his unbeaten century in the first innings, England recovered from 176 for 5 to post 393 for 8 before Ben Stokes declared the innings. Root remained unbeaten on 118.
In reply, Australia scored 386 with Usman Khawaja playing a sublime knock of 141 runs. At the time of writing this report, England were on 97 for 3 with Root and Harry Brook fighting it out for the home side.
