“How do you explain that,” said commentator Russel Arnold when night-watchman Malinda Pushpakumara played an absolutely ridiculous shot to get out in the second innings of the ongoing second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo.

After finishing strongly on day 3 with the scoreboard reading 209 for 2, Sri Lanka made a cautious start with Dimuth Karunaratne and Pushpakumara adding 28 runs to the overnight score before a moment of madness undid all the good work and ended the promising 48-run stand. With Sri Lanka still needing over 200 runs to avoid an innings defeat, every run and wicket would be crucial and Pushpakumara getting out to a rash shot was the last thing the hosts would have wanted.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who had taken a five-wicket haul in the first innings, bowled a tossed-up delivery around the middle. And as soon as the ball was released by Ashwin, Pushpakumara reversed his stance and tried to play a peculiar shot but missed it completely and consequently, the ball went on to shatter the stumps.

Here is a clip of that dismissal:

Meanwhile, 3 runs after Pushpakumara’s dismissal, Ravindra Jadeja removed skipper Dinesh Chandimal for just 2 to leave the hosts reeling at 241 for 4, still 198 runs behind India’s first innings total.
