Mohammed Siraj bowled a brilliant final over to help India beat West Indies by three runs in the thrilling first ODI at Queen’s Park Oval on Friday.

Team India overcame a brilliant fight from West Indies to clinch the thrilling first ODI of the three-match series. Chasing a big total of 309, West Indies put up a good fight but eventually fell short by three runs as they finished on 305 for 6.

Asked to bat first, India rode on fifties from skipper Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to post a big total of 308 for 7. At one stage, India were comfortably placed at 213 for 1 in the 34th over and were looking destined to touch the 350-run mark.

However, the visitors could not finish their innings strongly. Dhawan top-scored for India with 97 and shared two big partnerships. He and Gill (64) added 119 runs for the first wicket before the latter was run-out.

It was followed by another solid partnership as Dhawan and Iyer (54) added 94 runs for the second wicket. In reply, West Indies came up with a strong fight but just could not cross the finishing line.

Kyle Mayers and Brandon King scored fifties to lay the foundation for West Indies’ spirited fight before Romario Shepherd’s quickfire cameo in the end nearly took the hosts to a memorable win.

Mohammed Siraj’s final over heroics:

India fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj held his nerve in the final over to power his team to a thrilling win. Siraj had to defend 14 runs in the final over and he eventually managed to do it.

The first three balls went for five runs before the right-arm pacer conceded a double and a wide. With 7 needed from the final two balls, Shepherd scored a double to bring down the equation to 5 off the last ball.

With Shepherd in good form, Mohammed Siraj had his task cut out. Shepherd was punishing every bad delivery and Siraj had little margin of error. And in the end, the Hyderabad star came up with a stunning yorker to power India to win.
