Ben Stokes’ last ODI appearance came on Tuesday during the first ODI between England and South Africa. Earlier this week, the World Cup-winning allrounder had announced that the first ODI against the Proteas would be his last in the 50-over format.

Stokes, however, could not end his memorable ODI career on a winning note. He failed to deliver in his final ODI as South Africa thrashed the hosts by 62 runs to take the lead in the series.

The stage was set for him to bow out of ODIs in a fairytale manner in front of his home crowd. However, the England Test skipper could not do well with both bat and ball in his final outing.

With the ball, he gave away 44 runs in just 5 overs without picking up a wicket. With the bat, he was out for just 5 off 11 balls as England’s recent poor displays in white-ball cricket continued.

Batting first, South Africa rode on Rassie van der Dussen’s brilliant 133-run knock to post a massive 333 for 5. Janneman Malan (57) and Aiden Markram (77) scored fifties too.

In reply, England were off to a solid start as Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow added 102 runs for the first wicket. However, once the stand was broken, the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 271 in the 47th over.

Ben Stokes’ last ODI appearance:

Ben Stokes’ performance did not matter much in his final ODI outing as he received a moving farewell from the fans at his home ground. As soon as he was dismissed, the fans stood up and applauded as Stokes made his way out of the field for one last time in ODIs.

Stokes’ face made it clear that he was moved by the gesture from the fans and acknowledged it by raising his bat before entering the dressing room.
