Continuing his stunning form in Tests, Usman Khawaja, on Sunday (June 18), scored a classy century to rescue Australia from a precarious position in the ongoing first Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston.
In reply to England’s first innings total of 393 for 8 declared, Australia made a poor start with the bat. The visitors were reeling at 67 for 3 at one stage. However, Usman Khawaja batted throughout the day and shared crucial stands with middle-order batsmen to help Australia finish the day on a commanding position of 311 for 5.
He added 81 with Travis Head, who made 50, and 72 with Cameron Green. Both Head and Green were removed by Moeen Ali on his return to Test cricket. At one stage, Australia were reeling at 220 for 5 and were on the backfoot. However, Khawaja shared a fine unbroken stand of 91 with Alex Carey to put Australia in a good position.
Thanks to Khawaja’s impressive knock, Australia have now moved to a position from where they can take a first-innings lead. The left-handed batsman remained unbeaten on 126 while Carey was batting on 52 when day 2 of the Test came to an end.
Usman Khawaja’s daughter steals the show:
After the impressive batting, Usman Khawaja addressed the journalists during the post-day press conference. And while the cricketing fraternity was definitely waiting to listen to the Australia opener’s experience, the show was stolen by his adorable daughter. The batting star sat down with Aisha in his arms, letting the press pack know that “she didn’t want to be away from me”. Aisha can be heard asking about her younger sister Ayla, who was born in May 2022.
“Daddy, baby Ayla’s not here!” Aisha said.
“Yeah, she’s not here, baby Ayla’s not here, she’s with Mama,” replied Khawaja.
“We’ll go back soon though, okay? Two minutes.”
The Australia star then proceeded to start the press conference by saying: “I don’t know how long I have here, so let’s do this.”
And everything was going on smoothly until Aisha decided to steal the show. She started flipping through a journalist’s camera roll before Khawaja told her: “Stop swiping through the camera!” much to the delight of the journalists.
“It’s okay, you can do it later – you can play with Dad’s phone,” he added.
