Indian skipper Virat Kohli was just on the verge of registering a century once more time but fell short of achieving the landmark by just eight runs at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Kohli in fine tune yet again and was cruising towards century when Coulter-Nile managed to dismiss him and end his stay at the crease. His efforts came at a crucial time for India as he walked in after the early fall of opener Rohit Sharma with the teams score reading just 19.
Together with Rahane, Kohli compensated for the poor performance in the series opener at Chennai and forged 102 runs stand to take India to a comfortable position, Later, he was assisted by Kedar Jadhav in the process of helping India gain a platform for a big total.
Kohli was batting by a large flawlessness and was close to reaching his fourth hundred in the last ten innings before the unexpected happened.
The first (in the past ten innings) came against West Indies at Kingston, Jamaica, where he scored an unbeaten 111 against the hosts.
Later on after a calm Champions Trophy 2017 in England, he amplified his stats with back to back hundreds against Sri Lanka in their backyard.
This superb show also took him to the joint second position in the overall list of century makers in the history of ODI cricket along with Australian great Rickey Ponting. Only Sachin Tendulkar, with 49 centuries, has more hundreds than Kohli at the moment. And, considering the pace at which Kohli is hammering the numbers, it seems very much possible that he may very likely surpass his idol one day in the future.
Meanwhile, this knock did not go in vain as far as record were concerned as he became the joined the likes of Azharuddin (1998) and MS Dhoni (2009) to become the Indian skipper most number of 50+ scores.
