WBBL 2017/18: Harmanpreet Kaur Extends Her Association with Sydney Thunders

The swashbuckling middle-order batswoman from India, Harmanpreet Kaur has extended her association with the franchise team Sydney Thunder’s in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), as she signs a new two-year deal.

Kaur signed the contract on the last day of the tournament’s contracting period, which commences from December 9.

The cricketer from Moga became the first woman from India to strike an overseas T20 deal scoring 296 runs with an average of 59.2 and a strike rate of 117, the second highest run-scorer from her team. She was also useful with her slow off-spin, as she picked up six wickets, including four wickets in a game against Melbourne Stars. She was nominated as Sydney Thunder’s best player of the season, although her team didn’t make it to the playoffs.

Lee Germon, Sydney Thunder’s General Manager, was excited to have back Harman on their squad.

“Following the Women’s World Cup, Harmanpreet was the hottest property in cricket. She showed during that tournament, and through her performances with the Thunder, that she is one of, if not the most, destructive batters in the game at the moment,” Germon stated.

Harmanpreet drew all the eyeballs after her heroics in the semifinal of the Women’s World Cup 2017 against Australia early this year. She recorded the highest individual score ever in women’s cricket in the knockout score when she hit an unbeaten 171 off 115 balls to take India to the finals of the World Cup single-handedly.

Earlier, she also steered India to a tense final win in the World Cup Qualifiers. Jo Broadbent, the Thunder’s coach also spoke highly about Harmanpreet’s hard-hitting quality and the value she brings to the team.

“She’s a match-winner, and that’s what you need in T20, you need those match-winners. She’s got that really good blend of technique and power; she really works on the basics. She’s just incredible and such a great person to have. Her bat does most of the talking. Normally in the women’s (T20) game if you get your run rate up to eight runs an over, you rarely see players explode and get over ten runs an over and do that for four or five overs. She can do that. If we had to get 10 or 12 runs an over and she was in the middle, you’d almost be backing her to win a game,” Broadbent was heard saying to adelaidenow.com.au.

The 28-year-old Harman’s signing comes after the Kiwi wicket-keeper-batter Rachel Priest moved to Melbourne Renegades from the Thunders. However, they need two more signings to complete their 15-member squad before the deadline for this edition.
