Every era of Indian Cricket has its flag bearer. He is the one man, the fans worship in this cricket crazy nation. In the ’60s it was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Next was Sunil Gavaskar who taught India how to face pacers courageously. He was followed by the greatest Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar- a man who carried the burden of million hopes on his shoulder for 24 long years. And now the flag bearer is the young and dynamic Virat Kohli.
Kohli represents the next stage in India’s transformation. His fearless approach on the field, his body language, his attitude has made him different from the others. India’s youth now are a lot more confident and fearless than previous generations and Kohli has that charisma in his personality which represents the modern Indian youth. In the past, Indian teams, especially while on overseas tours, have gone about their job quietly. Kohli’s illustrious predecessors believed to answer the opposition with their performance rather than their mouth. Dhoni preferred to be the diplomat: hardly showing emotion, matter-of-fact words, and aggressive only with the bat. But with Kohli the scenario is completely different- his attitude and aggression are as spot on as his flawless batting. He does not like to be bullied and takes the fight to the opposition-both with the bat as well as his mouth.
After the retirement of stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly and VVS Laxman India needed a batsman to become the next flag-bearer of the team and one can say that Kohli has exceeded every expectation. Kohli has been ruling the cricket arena with his batting in the last few years. In his short career, he has already played some very memorable innings which will always be a part of the folklore. Undoubtedly the man is on his way to greatness. Belting out a brilliant performance in every other match has compelled the fans to bow down to him and as a tribute to the modern icon, one fan has come out with a beautiful song dedicated to Kohli. The singer named Johnny Gaddar has sung the song called Kohlified. Boys want to emulate his style and batting while girls are crazy for him. Fair to say the whole nation is-“Kohlified.”
