BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed that the BCCI is trying to introduce home and away matches in the upcoming WPL season. He disclosed that the board is keen on hosting the event during the Diwali window in the coming seasons.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League  2023 was a huge success, with Mumbai Indians winning the title against Delhi Capitals.

“We are mulling the possibility of scheduling the WPL, in the home and away format, in the Diwali window; not two seasons in a year but just a different time window,” Jay Shah said.

Jay Shah asserted that women’s cricket has a dedicated fan base and they will explore the opportunity to grow the league in the country. The BCCI secretary cited the example of TRP of the game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians as the most-watched match in the maiden edition.

“Women’s cricket now has a dedicated audience base and this number will only keep growing as we expect an encouraging turnout at the next WPL, The RCB vs MI was the most watched game with a TVR of 0.41 among all India urban + rural, male + female, 15+ audience. The Gujarat Giants vs RCB match was the second most viewed match with 0.4 TVR,” Jay Shah added.

In the 2023 season, Delhi Capitals played very well in the league stage but failed in the grand finale against Mumbai. The Mumbai-based franchise was dominant throughout the season producing scintillating performances in the league and winning the championship under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur.

Mumbai Indians’ Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia were named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament and Emerging Player of the Tournament respectively of the WPL 2023.

Jay Shah spoke highly regarding BCCI’s capability in global cricket, as they pulled out huge success in the first event of the women’s franchise league in India. He reiterated that this would eventually help to grow women’s cricket in India.

 “The WPL 2023 bears testimony to BCCI’s capability to pull off a first-of-its-kind event, aided by the continued growth trajectory that women’s cricket in India is on,” Shah further added.

In the inaugural edition of the WPL, at least five teams participated including Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Giants (GG), and UP Warriorz (UP-W).
