We Did Not Get Carried Away By Ashwin And Played Him Like A Regular Bowler: Akhil Herwadkar

The season of Ranji Trophy has been marked by the presence of star players. From Ravindra Jadeja to Ravichandran Ashwin to Murali Vijay, all have made their presence felt in the tournament and apart from that, have provided an upper hand to their team as well.

The opposition team is already under pressure when they see likes of these playing the game, but that wasn’t the case with Mumbai in the third round, even when Tamil Nadu gained the first innings lead,

“He is a world class bowler. We were asked to watch him out and play a positive game. We did not get carried away because he is Ashwin and played him like a regular bowler. He did not use many variations as the ball was already going away for me, but he used carom ball and leg spin for the righties,” Akhil Herwadkar, the Mumbai batsman said.

Herwadkar, who was under pressure before this game, went on to play an innings of 132 in the second innings after being dismissed for a duck in the first innings. It felt like skipper Aditya Tare had made a mistake by dropping Jay Bista from the squad, but Herwadkar soon found form and fixed his place in the top order.

He, along with Shreyas Iyer, countered the threat of R Ashwin, who went wicketless in the second innings in 26 overs for 110 runs. They countered him well and made merry in the second innings, scoring a century each.

A century in this game in this game was a good exercise for Iyer, who will now join the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting on November 1. Iyer also presented a case for a place in the playing XI with an innings of 138 in the second innings off just 124 deliveries. His innings included nine sixes as well.

His performance has undoubtedly put pressure on Indian skipper Virat Kohli, and now there are chances that Iyer might make his international debut in the Delhi T20I.

Meanwhile, Mumbai has received a big boost ahead of their next game as Ajinkya Rahane, and Shardul Thakur have been added to the squad for their next game against Odisha. These two are not part of the India T20I squad, and hence, Mumbai selectors decided to avail the services of the duo.
