We have the potential to perform and win – Angelo Mathews

The last 12 months have been profusely mediocre for Sri Lankan cricket, as the lions have struggled terribly in all forms of the game. Barring their test series victory over West Indies at home, there has been nothing much to write off about the side. The retirement of greats like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene has further dented the side’s performance.

Youngsters like Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have performed well only in patches. The two batsmen, often termed as the future of Sri Lankan cricket have been very inconsistent and that has been another reason behind Sri Lanka’s woes. With a full tour of England lined up, things look utterly uphill for the Sri Lankans.

In an interaction with the press, skipper Angelo Mathews spoke positively about his side and said that the Sri Lankans had the ability to perform and win anywhere. “We came close to beating New Zealand twice and we won the Test series against West Indies,” said Mathews. This team has the potential to perform and win. The two warm-up games will be crucial for us to acclimatize ourselves to the conditions we are going to come up against. We are going to two extremes of temperatures from the high we have been experiencing at home to an almost freezing point in England. The need to adjust very quickly to the changes is the key. If we can do that we can overcome a major hurdle.”

“When you have a young and inexperienced side you have nothing to lose but go out there and perform, that’s what the team will do. The key is their fearless attitude to take up the challenge and deliver,” Mathews further added, emphasizing on the need to be positive and fearless.

The last time Sri Lanka toured England, they won the test series 1-0. Seeking positives from that tour, Mathews said, “It was my first tour of England and I managed to adjust to the conditions and come out on top,” Mathews said. “I expect the same with the present crop of players most of whom are alien to English conditions.”

“I am quite confident we can achieve the same result this time around. I know that we are a bit on the inexperienced side without the likes of Sanga Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene but I won’t say that batting is the weak point, maybe in experience, yes. This team is prepared to take on anyone with their fearless approach,” said Mathews.
