We Know The Talent Shimron Hetmyer Has – Kieron Pollard
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard was all praise for the talented batsman Shimron Hetmyer. The left-hander was at his absolute best as he scored a blistering knock of 139 runs off just 106 balls to help the Windies go 1-0 in the three-match series against India at Chennai. The southpaw scored 11 fours and seven sixes to help his team get over the line by eight wickets in the series opener.
Furthermore, Hetmyer got the support from Shai Hope. The right-hander scored a patient knock of 102 from 151 balls and anchored the run chase. It was a fine effort from the West Indies to draw first blood in the series. Hope and Hetmyer added 218 runs for the second wicket alliance to lay down the foundation of a successful run chase.
Hetmyer was at his brutal best.
In fact, it wasn’t the easiest of the wickets but Hetmyer made it look like a flat track. The left-hander batted at the top of his game to bring his fifth ODI century and help his side win convincingly.
Kieron Pollard said in the post-match presentation, “We know the talent that he has. He has been struggling a bit in the last 9 months and he has been under a lot of pressure. We just want to make him understand his role in the side. He has been on the team for the last 18 months so he has a taste of international cricket. As management we are very happy about his knock. Everyone playing should be accountable and responsible as you are playing for your team”.
On the other hand, Sheldon Cottrell has taken giant strides in the recent past. The left-arm pacer had impressed with his performances in the World Cup and he has been a consistent performer for the side. Cottrell bowled three maiden overs and scalped two wickets in the match to contribute towards the win. Hence, Pollard was all praise for the pacer.
Pollard added, “Cottrell has a magnificent last 18 months. With experience comes confidence and Cottrell is bowling superbly for us. We have talent in the Caribbean, we need to give the opportunity to the players. (On Jadeja’s run-out) At the end of the day, the right decision was made and that’s the most important thing for me”.
West Indies have taken a 1-0 lead and they would like to continue their good form going. India and the Windies will lock horns in the second ODI at Visakhapatnam on the 18th of December.
