India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma believes that there are a lot of spots to fill for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which will take place later in the year in Australia. The Indian think tank is throwing opportunities to the young players to strengthen their bench strength. The likes of Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur are getting the opportunities in the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Both of these pacers had impressed with their performance in the second T20I at Holkar Stadium on 7th January. Shardul Thakur scalped three wickets in his final over whereas Navdeep Saini bowled with fire to take two wickets and conceded only 18 runs in his quota of four overs. Saini was awarded the Man of the Match.
India is building its team.
It has been noticed that India has thrown opportunities to rookie players in the shortest format of the game to make a good crop of players for the World Cup. Some of the bowlers like Deepak Chahar have grabbed their chances and he is going to be a sure player in the mega event.
Rohit Sharma said while talking to Hindustan Times, “It is a long way from the World Cup. We are preparing for that, (and) a lot of guys are getting ready for that. (It) means there are a lot of spots we need to fill. It is a work in progress. Anyway, the 15-20 guys we have are all really good and have performed really well and are very confident. It is just about doing what we need to do in Australia and then try and win that World Cup.”
India had last won a major ICC Trophy back in 2013 when MS Dhoni took his team to glory in the Champions Trophy. Since then India has failed to cross the last few hurdles in the big events of the game. Consequently, Virat Kohli’s men will look to turn the tables in the T20 World Cup.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma had a memorable year in 2019 as he batted at the top of his game. The flamboyant batsman has been rested from the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. However, the stylish batsman will return for the ODI series against Australia. The first ODI against Australia will take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 16th January.
