We Should Leave It To Government To Decide, Says MS Dhoni On Playing Against Pakistan

Former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni, has commented on the issue of series between India and Pakistan and has said that the game between two countries is bigger than sports, but it is the Government who takes call on the matter,

“When it comes to India-Pakistan cricket, it is not just sports, but becomes much bigger than that. It is not a simple decision, but a diplomatic and a political decision. So, it is a big decision and I think we should leave it to the government to decide. If the government decides, we will go and play and if they decide against it, we will play some other series,” Dhoni told reporters in Kashmir.

“It is said that sports should be kept away from politics, but when it comes to cricket and involvement of Indian cricket team — be it a bilateral series or any big tournament — it is not just cricket because wherever we go to play, we generate a lot of money and ultimately that money flows into the economy,” Dhoni added.

The previous regime of BCCI head by Anurag Thakur had taken a tough stand on games against Pakistan as the former BCCI President had even said that the Indian team will not even play Pakistan in the ICC tournaments and would concede the game.

The Indian women’s team forfeited their games against Pakistan last year and had to play a qualifying tournament to play the World Cup.

The BCCI panel headed by Thakur was sacked by The Supreme Court of India in January early this year, and then, there was a no stand of BCCI on playing Pakistan in ICC trophies and both the teams faced each other not just once, twice during the ICC Champions Trophy.

On the first occasion, India defeated Pakistan while on the second occasion, Pakistan defeated India to wrest the Champions Trophy from the defending champions.

Indian women’s team too faced Pakistan in ICC World Cup and defeated the Sana Mir led side.

As of now, there are no talks for a bilateral series between India and Pakistan and a few days back; the Sports Ministry had reportedly denied BCCI the permission to play Pakistan. Though BCCI rejected the reports of Sports Ministry on this matter, reports revealed a different matter.

India and Pakistan might continue to face on each other in ICC tournaments but its a matter of fact that there is no series planned between the countries in coming years and chances of both the countries playing each other in a bilateral series also looks quite dim and bleak.

It was last in 2012/13 when both the two teams played a bilateral series when Pakistan travelled to India for T20I and ODI series. The T20I series ended in a draw with both the teams winning a game each while visitors won the ODI series by a margin of 2-1. However, it was a remarkable win for India in Delhi as they defended a small total of 167 in the last game.
